Guatemala leads the industrialization and use of Bamboo in Central America

Guatemala has become a benchmark in the Central American region, to industrialize and transform bamboo. This is what authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) estimate.

The Vice Minister of Rural Economic Development, Miguel Duro, indicated that thanks to the potential of this plant and the cooperation of the Technical Mission of China (Taiwan), Guatemala will be the first Central American country with an industrialization center for this crop.

According to Kevin Ou, manager of the Bamboo Project in Guatemala, the transformation plant will start operating next April. It will have 52 machines brought from China (Taiwan), for the processing of this crop and the creation of agricultural infrastructure, such as sheds, greenhouses, pylons, mesh houses, among others.

The investment of this project is Q7 million, destined for the construction of the factory, purchase of industrial transformation equipment and a space for training and research.

The announcement was made at the inauguration of a training session on the use of bamboo and the implementation of good practices for its commercialization, aimed at extension workers in Chimaltenango.

Bamboo is currently known as green steel or vegetable steel for its solidity and resistance in constructions.

Currently, MAGA provides technical assistance in 1,200 hectares located in Guatemala, Escuintla, Retalhuleu, Quetzaltenango, Petén and in other areas of the country with humid climatic conditions.
